Great points in here, Petisa!! Classification systems, as you mention here, have gone a long way in defining individuals. Hardt is really on to something in his talk--plus, its really fun to watch!

Yes, many greyish lines in "A Rape in Cyberspace." What I find interesting is the reaction of the woman whose avatar was raped. The meaning of the event was located within words that were "read." legba's strong visceral reactions surprised her, not only because of the event, but, I think, because of the power that reading has in the process of meaning-making. This goes back to DeVoss's and Howard's discussions, which I wrote a bit about in the comments to this post by Melissa.

Petisa, you ask some very good questions in here (and I totally--I mean, totally--get you with regards to Flava of Love--I mean--Come on!). A question we might ask is why we would expect YouTube to be "real" when we know that "reality TV" is manipulated, scripted, and not real at all. What do we mean by "reality"? Can there be a "real" in celuloid, virtual, or binary spaces?

I completely agree with the fact that technology is about building upon what is already there and making it more functional in our lives in the future. I also believe that the more and more literate people are the more that there is to write about hence we also may find ourselves elaborating on others facts and listing new and improved ideas... not plagarizing.

I also find it outrageous to say that Mark Twain, MLK and Thomas Jefferson plargarized.

You bring up some outstanding points, and lead to a very important question: What does it mean to be "real"? Don't we all adopt certain persona depending on the situations we find ourselves in?

What was also interesting was reading this without knowing just who posted it. It allows the reader to really create a "voice" to the author of the passage.

Please be sure to sign your work, though, so that I can be sure to note who completed it. If you want to be anonymous, come up with a screen name and just email it to me. Thanks, BW
